Networks and communications

Networks, WiFi, CCTV and fibre optics for buildings and industry

We install and review the communications infrastructure of buildings and industrial sites: data networks and structured cabling, racks and switches, business WiFi, fibre optics, IP cameras and people counters. As we are also controls integrators, the network is designed with the BMS, security and maintenance in mind, not just connectivity.

A single integrator for controls and communications

In many buildings the data network, WiFi, cameras and control system have been installed by different companies, at different times and without talking to each other. The result is all too familiar: undocumented switches, controllers hanging off the office network, cameras on the same network as the computers and nobody who knows which cable goes where.

At ACIPro we do both. We install networks, WiFi, CCTV and fibre optics, and we also integrate building management systems (BMS) with Niagara 4, Honeywell and other platforms. That allows us to design a single infrastructure with separate networks for each use, documented and maintainable. Our team is Cisco CCNA-trained, has more than 20 years' experience in industrial maintenance and controls, and works in Cáceres, across Extremadura and neighbouring provinces.

WiFi audits for businesses

A WiFi audit answers three questions: whether the signal reaches where it is needed, whether it can cope with its users and whether it is secure. It is the first step when a company's WiFi is failing, falling short or about to be expanded. We check:

  • Coverage. On-site measurement of signal level and signal-to-noise ratio, with dead spots marked on the floor plan.
  • Interference. Neighbouring networks, channel overlap and equipment that pollutes the spectrum.
  • Capacity. Number of users and devices per access point at peak times, and available bandwidth.
  • Security. WPA3 encryption or, at the very least, properly configured WPA2; 802.1X authentication with individual users on the corporate network instead of a shared password that everyone ends up knowing.
  • Guest networks. Isolated from the internal network, with internet-only access.
  • IoT devices. Sensors, displays, printers and control equipment on their own segmented networks, with no access to the office network.

The report sets out the problems found, their causes and the proposed measures, including the recommended location of access points if the network needs expanding.

We will reply within 24 working hours with an initial assessment.

Structured cabling and communications racks

Structured cabling is the foundation of any network: if it is done badly, no equipment can fix it. We install copper and fibre cabling with its containment, outlets, patch panels and communications racks, and we install and configure the switches.

  • Tidy racks, with labelled panels and patch leads and room to grow.
  • Labelling of every outlet and every port, consistent with the drawings.
  • Certification or testing of the links, with results provided.
  • Switch configuration with VLANs to separate office, guest, camera and control traffic.
  • Protected power supply and, where needed, PoE power for cameras and access points.

If the rack also needs its own electrical panel, we build and test it in our workshop. We explain how in our electrical panel guide.

Fibre optic installation: splicing, testing and documentation

Fibre optics is the option for linking buildings on the same site, distant floors or industrial units where copper cannot reach or suffers from interference. Our work covers the complete installation:

  • Pulling cable through indoor or outdoor containment and installing enclosures and distribution frames.
  • Fusion splicing of fibres with our own fusion splicer, for low-loss splices.
  • Testing of every link with our own test equipment, to check losses and locate faults.
  • Documentation with drawings, fibre allocation and test results, so that any future expansion starts from real data.

It is common in industry, campuses, hospitals and public buildings with several blocks, where the fibre carries the data network, the cameras and the control system all at once, over separate fibres or VLANs.

IP cameras and people counters

We install CCTV systems with IP cameras: survey of the areas to be covered, choice of lens to suit the scene, cabling, recording and access from the security workstation or a mobile phone, always over a secure connection. The cameras sit on their own network, separate from the office and control networks.

Video surveillance involves processing personal data, and in Spain it carries specific obligations under the GDPR and Article 22 of Ley Orgánica 3/2018 (the Spanish Data Protection Act). The main ones are:

  • Information sign in a sufficiently visible place, stating that surveillance is taking place, the identity of the data controller and how to exercise data protection rights.
  • Maximum retention of one month from recording, unless the footage must be kept as evidence of acts that threaten people, property or facilities.
  • Public highway: may only be recorded to the extent strictly necessary for security purposes.

We configure recording to comply with these time limits and position the cameras on the same basis; responsibility for the data processing lies with the owner, who should review it with their data protection adviser.

People counters measure entries, exits and occupancy at entrances, rooms or zones. As well as reporting on footfall, they provide a very useful input for building control.

Integration with the BMS and with security

The advantage of having the same integrator install both communications and controls is that the data is put to good use:

  • Occupancy-based ventilation. The people-counter reading feeds into the BMS and adjusts the outdoor air flow of a room or zone to the number of people actually present, instead of ventilating at full load all day.
  • Real schedules. Measured occupancy helps match HVAC and lighting schedules to how the building is actually used.
  • Network status in the supervisory system. Failure of a switch, a fibre link or the rack power supply shows up as a BMS alarm.
  • Segmentation. Each system on its own network: control, cameras, office, guests and IoT, with firewalls between them and encrypted remote access with individual users.

We cover the security of the control network in our BMS and OT cybersecurity service, and the integration of equipment from different manufacturers in open BMS integration.

Who we work for

We carry out networking and communications projects for owners of commercial and non-residential buildings, industry, healthcare centres, hotels, cinemas and theatres, and public administrations. We also work with engineering firms that need an installer to deliver and document the communications side alongside the controls; we explain how in services for engineering firms.

Every job is handed over with drawings, port and fibre schedules, equipment configurations and test results, so that the network can be maintained and expanded without relying on anyone's memory.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

What is a WiFi audit?

It is a review of a company's wireless network that measures on-site coverage, detects interference, checks capacity at peak times and reviews security: WPA3 encryption, 802.1X authentication, isolation of the guest network and segmentation of IoT devices. It ends with a report of the problems found and the proposed measures.

What is the difference between WPA3 and WPA2?

WPA3 is the latest version of the WiFi security standard. It improves password protection against dictionary attacks and strengthens encryption. If some older devices do not support it, properly configured WPA2 can be kept on a separate network while they are replaced, without weakening security elsewhere.

What is 802.1X and why is it worthwhile for a business?

802.1X is an authentication system in which each user or device joins the network with its own credentials, instead of a shared password. It lets you see who is connected, assign each one to the right network and revoke a specific person's access without changing the password for everyone.

How long can camera footage be kept?

Under Article 22 of Ley Orgánica 3/2018, footage must be deleted within a maximum of one month from recording, unless it must be kept as evidence of acts against people, property or facilities. A visible information sign must also be displayed. We configure recording to respect that time limit.

What is a people counter used for in a building?

It measures entries, exits and occupancy at entrances, rooms or zones. As well as providing footfall data, it can be integrated into the BMS to ventilate according to actual occupancy and match HVAC and lighting schedules to how the building is used.

Do you install and splice fibre optics?

Yes. We pull the cable, install enclosures and distribution frames, splice the fibres with our own equipment, test every link and hand over documentation with drawings, fibre allocation and test results. It is common for linking buildings on the same site or industrial units.

Why separate the camera and control networks from the office network?

Because if everything is on the same network, a single compromised device gives access to everything else, and camera traffic can swamp the rest. With VLANs and firewalls, each system communicates only with what it needs to, and a problem on one network does not spread to the others.

Do you have a control system that nobody knows how to maintain?

We review your installation and tell you what can be reused, what should be replaced and how much you could save.
